Professional development of school ICT champions

To further support teachers who are integrating digital technology at their schools in the district, Fezile Dabi DTDC invited them to participate in a Microsoft Innovation workshop that incorporates the 21st Century Learnng Design Course.

Partipants got trained on the following topics

  1. Elements of 21st Century Learning Design
  2. Learner Collaboration in Task
  3. Skilled communication using Digital Technology
  4. Knowledge Construction using Digital Technology
  5. Regulating Long Term Learning Activities
  6. Real-World problem Solving
  7. Planning the inclusion of Digital Technologies in Learning Activities.
  8. Pratical Examples of 21st Century Learning Design

Fezile Dabi DTDC's pride lies with the success of 67 Out-of-School youth. They successfully completed their Microsoft Digital Literacy Certification (DLC). 

Microsoft Digital Literacy is an essential computing skills curriculum that builds basic knowledge and concepts about computing today. The course topics covered include:

  • Computer Basics
  • The Internet and World Wide Web
  • Productivity Programs
  • Computer Security and Privacy
  • Digital Lifestyles

Seated with the succesfully certified youth  is Fezile Dabi Centre Manager Mme Potsane and the Microsoft Student to Business (S2B) intern Mofokeng Mohau. The event was a great success.

Towards sustainable future through Multilingual Education

Mobile Library

On 25 October 2016 the Fezile Dabi Disitrict was visited by Mr. Fujimura, First Secretary, Economic and Social Development for the Japanese Embassy in South Africa and Mr. Hasunuma and Mme. Sogai, both from the South African Primary Education Support Initiative (SAPESI).

The purpose of the visit was for Mr. Fujimara and Mme Sogai to gain first hand experiece of the operation of the Mobile Libraries which are sponsored by SAPESI Japan.

 

Educational resources at your fingertips

Easy access to educational resources is crucial to the continuing professional development of teachers. Additional to the learning and teaching materials already available at the Free State District Teacher Development Centres (DTDC), teachers can now also access information on the interactive kiosks or Breadbins.

Breadbins

VVOB supports the Free State Department of Education with the procurement of 6 distribution points for digital content, also called Breadbins, to support the access of educators and office based officials to open educational resources in the DTDCs/Vodacom ICT Centres.

The Breadbins are customised kiosks which serve as distribution points for the sourcing and delivery of digital content (text, pictures, sound & video). The Kiosks run on an open source operating system that enables content

Analysing educational datasets with subject advisors in Free State – more fun than it sounds

In February 2015, 45 subject advisors from the Free State engaged in a trajectory to strengthen their research skills. From 17-19 August 2016 the third and last workshop in this trajectory was held at the DTDC in Kroonstad. This workshop had two tracks: an advanced and a basic track.

The case study for the learning trajectory is a longitudinal research project from the University of Antwerp, Belgium in collaboration with the Free State Department of Education (FS DOE) and VVOB.  The central research question of this research is whether there is a relation between participation in teacher professional development, learning outcomes and attitudes towards learning in teaching.
