About the centre

The ICT resource centre in Thaba Nchu serves a number of rural, semi-rural and urban schools in the towns of Ladybrand, Tweespruit, Hobhouse, Excelsior, Wepener, Vanstadensrus, Dewetsdorp, Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu itself.

The Motheo region has a number of education challenges, which the centre will work to help alleviate. There is a low pass rate in the key subjects of Mathematics, Physical Science, English and Geography at the school exit points of Grades 9 and 12.

The quality of instruction is not optimal, nor is management of Mathematics and Science by school heads of department. There is also a decline in the number of learners opting for pure Mathematics (as opposed to Mathematical Literacy) and Physical Science.

The centre works to improve this situation in a number of ways, such as its mobile library, a bus that takes library services to 61 rural Motheo schools for four days a week during school terms. It also plans to improve access to ICT tools and technology for learners and the broader community, and to become a centre of excellence for the professional development of educators in ICT, Maths and Science.
