Learning Centre empowers Girls through DigiGirlz Programme

Last week 60 girls from Lofentse Girls High School took part in a DigiGirlz programme at the Orlando Pirates Learning Centre. DigiGirlz is a Microsoft programme that gives high school girls the opportunity to learn about careers in technology, connect with Microsoft employees, and participate in hands-on computer and technology workshops. The programme in partnership with Microsoft and School Net is for young ladies (grade 9-11) who have an interest in technology.

The afternoon was all about girl empowerment and raising interest in a normally male dominated industry. Female guest speakers motivated the girls before they had a chance to try their skills in coding and programming computers. Female Microsoft employees volunteered at the centre to assist the girls with the programme and to act as role models as they are already working in the field of IT.

One of the students, Ntobela Botle, said: “The day was very beneficial as we were taught about computer science and its advantages. The programme helped us realise that there are

many careers in IT that are available to us. The guest speakers were very motivating!”

“I have learnt so much about IT and the opportunities available to us after school. It was amazing as I always wanted to be a computer pro.” Said another one of the students, Thandeka Ndlovu.

The Afternoon ended with certificates being awarded to all the students for their participation in the programme. The girls left the centre feeling motivated and inspired about their futures in IT and Computer Science.
