About the centre
The Pholela /Mahwaqa Education Centre is a free standing District Teacher Development Centre (DTDC) based in the rural village of Bulwer approximately 110 km west of Pietermaritzburg in KZN.
The centre is equipped with a science laboratory, a computer laboratory, Library, meeting rooms, a kitchen, a reception, two offices and ablution facilities.
The purpose of the Education Centre is to be an oasis of teacher development and provide resources to previously marginalized schools and the community of Bulwer. The centre assists and equips learners with learning material and career guidance. In addition the centre hosts all departmental workshops and meetings for all stakeholders.
An important function of the centre is to provide ICT technical support to the approximately 126 schools in Pholela Circuit that have access to the Centre.

- Assist educators and learners with library and computer facility
- Lab assistant to help teachers with science experiments

- Vula maths programme workshops teachers and assist learners with mathematics
- Assist grade 12 learners with bursary /cao applications online
- Provide venue for meetings and workshops
- Repair and install computer software for neighbouring schools
- Provide administration duties for neighbouring schools (printing, scanning,binding, typing, photocopying and emailing)
- Provide internet access to learners/teachers and unemployed youth
- Provide venue for AET and senior certicates classes and it is exam centre for senior certificate
- Provide computer classes for the community and teachers
- Provide neighbouring schools with science laboratory facility
- Provide schools with cao application forms, reap bursaries and other bursary application forms
- Provide AET and senior certificate classes to alleviate illiteracy rate in the community
