matricexamskidsinclass13 October 2016 – From Monday 24 October approximately 815 609 candidates will be writing the National Senior Certificate examinations in over 7 000 centres nationwide.

The Digital Classroom presents an overview of available online resources to assist the candidates in their exam preparations.

All systems go

Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, has declared the South African examination system ready for the 2016 final examinations.

Preparations for the oncoming examinations have started in earnest and all assessment bodies have presented their plans to Umalusi.

For the National Senior Certificate (NSC) alone, the 2016 examinations will be written by approximately 668 612 full time and 146 997 part-time candidates with a total of approximately 815 609 candidates. These examinations will take place at more than 7 000 centres and will be marked by over 38 000 markers across the provinces.

The Independent Examinations Board has registered 11 821 full time candidates across the country and 34 part time candidates in 230 examination centres.

Zero-rated online resources

Vodacom e-schoolZero-rated means that no data charges apply for Vodacom users, all content and resources on the websites can be browsed and downloaded for free. Please note that for YouTube videos that are accessed through the Digital Classroom or other zero-rated educational websites normal data-charges apply.


Department of Basic Education (zero-rated)
On the Department of Basic Education website you can find all relevant information about NSC 2016 and the provincial contact details. The DBE also offers a number of tips for exam preparations. One important tip is to work through as many past examinations as you can.

Siyavula offers technology-powered learning for success in Maths and Science where you can track your progress and achieve your goals with the practice service. Textbooks are brought to life with videos and simulations.


Vodacom E-School (zero-rated)
Vodacom E-School offers interactive digital content to learn, revise and track your progress in all Grade 12 subjects.

2Enable offers (daily) online maths and science lessons for grades 10-12. Please follow this link and register on the 2Enable platform. You can keep updated on the lesson programme via Facebook and Twitter.


Geleza Nathi
SABC1’s Geleza Nathi delivers core curriculum concepts across six subjects to grade 10 – 12 learners and gets them equipped with knowledge to ace their exams at the end of the year.
You can follow the Geleza Nathi broadcasts on weekdays between 05h00 and 06h00 with repeats between 23h00 and 24h00. Geleza Nathi also has a very active Facebook-page.


Nolwazi is an initiative from the Coza Cares Foundation and offers Open Education Resources (OER), including over 3 000 resources for Grade 12. Open Educational Resources (OERs) are educational materials that are in the public domain or introduced with an open license. The nature of these open materials means that anyone can legally and freely copy, use, adapt and re-share them.


Western Cape Education Department
Matric candidates can view a wide range of matric revision videos on the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) YouTube channel. They provide guidance mainly on how to tackle specific questions in the exams.
