Grade 4 - Term 3 & 4: Language Structures and Conventions

  • josephs cradleJoseph’s Cradle is a tale about a village that lost its special tree which had always been in the village for all their lives. After the tree had fallen, a man by the name of Joseph created a baby cradle from it which would serve as a reminder of the tree and would also be used for every new born baby in the village.

    Suitable for these activities:

    • Listen to an informative text with visuals
    • Listen for specific details
    • Link information to own life.
    • Sentence level work: Simple and complex sentences.
  • squirrelSquirrel and the Sun is a tale about how bats came to exist. When the sun failed to rise one morning, the animals decided to engage in a search for it, and it was little squirrel who found it and it was able to rise again and shine on all the animals.

    Suitable for these activities:

    • Listen to the story
    • Identify specific details
    • Keep to the topic.
    • Write a friendly letter
    • Spelling and Punctuation: Capital letters, full stops, commas, word division.
    • Word level work: Tenses, conjunctions, pronouns
  • boereworsThe Boerewors man is an interesting story about a boerewors that came to life and spent its little life running from hungry people but ending on the claws of a fish eagle.

    Suitable for these activities:

    • Listen to an advertisement
    • Discuss the structure, language use, purpose and audience of the text
    • Write an advertisement
    • Word level work: Conjunctions
    • Spelling and Punctuation: Capital letters, full stops, commas, word division.
  • the feastThe Feast has a self-explanatory title. It is a tale about a fisherman and his family, who after a season of Papa Snuts not catching any fish in the sea, help each other prepare a feast that they all enjoy.

    Suitable for these activities:

    • The teacher shows the title to the learners which is followed by a series of photos
    • The learners would be required to predict the story from just the title and the pictures.
    • Reflect on text read independently
    • Retell the story in 3-5 sentences
    • Express emotional response to text read.
    • Word level work: Adverbs of place, tenses, conjunctions and pronouns
  • pigThe old woman and her pig is a tale that plays much with words. It is based on an old woman who bought a pig that was stubborn and refused to listen to her instructions while they are on their way home. She then summons others to help her get her pig to listen to her so they might reach their home before the moon rises and it gets dark.

    Suitable for these activities:

    • Write a character sketch
    • The learners identify main and supporting ideas
    • Use reading strategies skimming and scanning
    • Understand the vocabulary
    • Word level work: infinitive verbs
    • Sentence level work: main clause, dependent clause
    • Word meaning- similes, metaphor, idioms and proverbs
  • tselani giantTselane and the Giant is a Folkore that takes place long ago when giants roamed freely and chickens could talk. It is situated in a small village where a little girl and her mother had a tradition of singing to one another before opening the door.

    When a giant overheard this, he tried ways to abduct the girl when her mother went to the fields. The giant tried until he succeeded but the village people helped the girl escape from the giant.

    Suitable for these activities:

    • The teacher shows the title to the learners which is followed by a series of photos
    • The learners would be required to predict the story from just the title and the pictures.
