About the centre

Education centres differ on programs they offer when it comes to education support and development. It depends on the identified needs of the community the centre is serving.

The qualifications and the experiences the staff of the centre possess, have a great impact on what to offer.
Tongaat Education Centre is a free-standing centre that offers daily programmes of workshops and meetings like any other education centre.

Over and above this centre extends its programme through intensive programs of learners and educators. These programs are of intervention nature to promote quality education during classroom activities. The adoption of aims and objectives of remedial education is what makes these programs unique and more effective.

The Tongaat Education Centre is well situated in sub-urban of Tongaat and is 400m away from public transport. It is accessible in the sense that centre users can choose any type of transport. The greatest of all it is only 6km away from King Shaka Airport.

The centre is one of the well resourced centres in the province. It has a hall that can accommodate up to 200 people (partitioned), Vodacom ICT Centre, a library, Science Laboratory, a meeting room, board room, dinning room, kitchen, store room and 3 offices.

A day at the centre
The centre has a an average of 1 200 clientele in a month. It accommodates SACE CPTD workshops over a period of 6 months per annum. The availability of a Science Laboratory allows educators and learners to get assisted on conducting experiments and workshopped in teaching and learning Mathematics.

Casme Science and Mathematics Training are offered quarterly to district officials, teachers and NPOs.

The centre has a library.
Resources for all subjects from Grades 1 to 12 are available
The centre has a computer room with 30 laptops
We also provide training/development and computer support

The Centre has four rooms for meetings and workshops (including hall).
The fourth one is a board room, in most of the time it is reserved for senior management and small meetings.
The kitchen has enough catering equipment to cater for up to 160 people per day. It has an attached dinning room.
Printing Facilities
Obtain budget approval
Obtain the necessary stationery ie. duplicating paper, transparencies, inter-leafs, etc.
Arrangements for printing must be confirmed (fax approval) three days before submission of printing material
Sufficient time should be given for completion of printing (depending on the quantity of printing required)
Drop-in clients will be accommodated depending on the availability of the printing machine and personnel.

Operation ‘Sukuma Sakhe’ (OSS)
This centre strongly embraces Operation ‘Sukuma Sakhe’ (OSS). In that way it receives many referrals of education cases from other government departments and different communities around eThekwini municipality, Pinetown and Ilembe Districts. The geographical location of this centre makes it inevitable to strongly serve these areas. OSS has also contributed for the centre to initiate the existing programs.

Vodacom ICT centre
It has become the main point of attraction since Grade 10, 11 and 12 educators are getting a a chance to be helped and help themselves through Mindset learning.

SAMS data collection and good ICT support 
The Centre is used for SA SAMS data collection because it has a competent personnel in ICT support
SA SAMS interventions are done on one on one with clerks from Pinetown and Ilembe District
Different Circuit Managers and DCESs use this centre ICT Office as a refuge for ICT support and backup.
