About the centre

The R19-million state-of-the-art Anglo American Science, Career Guidance and ICT Resource Centre based at Landau Mine, Matimba Village near eMalahleni (Witbank) in Mpumalanga was opened on 1 June 2010. The facility is jointly funded and operated by Anglo American, the Vodacom Foundation, the Mpumalanga Department of Education, the national Department of Basic Education, the Eskom Foundation and the MTN SA Foundation.

The Centre boasts interactive science, career guidance and high-tech ICT resource facilities, and will be used by educators and learners throughout the Nkangala school district. The district includes the towns of Ogies, eMalahleni, Middelburg, Delmas, Belfast, Machadodorp, Dullstroom, Hendrina, Kwa Mhlanga Siyabuswa and Moretele. The Centre aims to enhance the delivery of excellence in education in Mpumalanga, particularly in the field of science, mathematics and information technology.

Vodacom ICT Resource Centre
The Vodacom ICT Resource Centre occupies the second floor of the extensive facility, which is equipped with a wheelchair lift. The Centre offers 50 computers, educational aids and models, Internet connectivity, educational content and training for centre managers and subject advisors

Vodacom supplies connectivity, content hosting, and Internet connectivity and has refurbished parts of the building. The Centre has the capability to link up with other schools in the region. These schools are also equipped with interactive white board technology, enabling learners to actively participate in lessons without having to leave their classrooms.

The Vodacom ICT Resource Centre is both an accredited Microsoft training facility and a registered Cisco technical training facility. As part of their commitment to the Mobile Education Programme, Microsoft and Cisco will provide training at a minimal fee to members of the community.

Services delivered by the eMalahleni facility include:

  • Continuous teacher training, including subject-specific training
  • Multimedia resources to be used as teaching and learning aids
  • General Internet access for pupils and the community at large
  • Digital educational content to be accessed by teachers and pupils
  • ICT training for the community at large
  • General communication services for the community


Management of the Centre
The manager of the institution is Mr. J Makopole. The 3 separate Centres are managed by the following facilitators:

Vodacom ICT Resource Centre – Mr N.L Serage and Mr M.E Chawane

Science centre
Mr Z.E Zitha (BSc Chemistry and Chemical Technology) has spent 4 years in tutoring, 3 years in chemical industry and then joined Anglo American Science Centre on August 2014. He is currently studying towards professional teaching qualification.
Mr Zitha's programme plans for the Centre include:

  • Managing, coordinating and controlling school groups visiting the centre
  • Demonstrating Science concepts and maintaining a database of Science Centre activities
  • Supporting formal and active researches into Science topics
  • Ensuring Science is accessible to the community through outreach programmes
  • Conducting Science workshops for teachers, learners and the community
  • Ensuring that the Science Centre addresses problematic issues in the community
  • Sharing of centre resources with schools (consumables).
  • Mentoring of unemployed science graduates through DST – SAASTA program.

Career centre

Career Guidance Centre
Mr S Simelane is an accredited career guidance counsellor. He is a qualified teacher with 20 years of experience and an Inclusive Education Master Trainer.
Mr Simelane's programme plans for the Centre include:

  • Developing learners' career awareness through capacitating Life Orientation teachers
  • Assessing learners on personality type and counselling on career choices
  • Helping out-of-school youth and community members with career awareness and research
  • Promoting the Career Guidance Centre in schools and the community
  • Interacting with higher learning institutions and industries to acquire relevant information to assist learners in career guidance
  • Supporting and capacitating community youth centres in the Nkangala district
  • Organising networking activities by inviting career experts from different career fields to interact with learners
  • To organise and attend career exhibitions.


ICT Resource Centre
Mr N.L. Serage (National Diploma IT -Software Development) and has 6 Months experience in ICT facilitation.
Mr M.E. Chawane (National Diploma IT -Software Development) and has 3 Months experience in ICT facilitation and 1 Year 3 Months as a social Facilitator.

ICT programme plans for the Centre include:

  • Microsoft Partners in Learning Teacher Professional Development
  • ICT Help Desk Train the Trainer
  • Training community members, educators and learners on the use of the internet for educational purposes
  • Assist teachers to access and use the electronic educational resources i.e. Question Paper Bank, NCS policies, Thutong Portal and Vodacom Digital Classroom, Cyberschool, Skoool, Yenka etc.
  • Working closely with a number of education service providers on professional teacher development
