About the centre

Mmakau Education Development and Support Centre (EDSC) is one of the 34 Teacher centres that were strengthened by UNISA in partnership with the Department of Basic Education.

The Centre was established in 2006 through the recommendations from the Multi Media Rural Initiative (MMRI) projects piloted in North West and Kwazulu-Natal by Media in Education Trust (MiET).

Mmakau EDSC is situated in the rural village of Mmakau, between Mmakau-Moemise Primary School and Mmakau SAPS. The centre provides service to 75 public ordinary schools, 7 independent schools, 3 special schools as well as communities in Madibeng Education District.

A hub of activities for schools and their communities

  • To bridge the digital divide among our teachers through engagement in ICT training programmes
  • To enhance full usage of the centre by advocating the centre usage to all stakeholders
  • To improve the schools’ communication through email set up and web browsing
  • To promote interdepartmental collaboration through joint planning and activities
  • To upgrade living conditions of communities through establishment of income-generating projects

For schools

  • Computer literacy for educators
  • e-Learning and ICT integration workshops
  • Tablet orientation and training for schools that received tablets for teaching and learning
  • Internet access for web browsing, online study and submissions
  • Distribution of subject specific content and educational software to schools
  • Provision of reprographic services
  • CPTD workshops for SMT and PL1 Teachers
  • Coordination of teacher attendance to ICT conferences for copying and sharing of best practices

 For district officials

  • Computer literacy trainings
  • Provision of venue for meetings and workshops
  • Provide support on e-learning integration and distribution of educational applications and software


  • The crèche established within the centre serves as a model for local crèches and an income generating project to reduce the scourge of unemployment
  • Provides kindergarten activities and services
  • Provide monitoring and support for Grade R within community crèches funded by NWED
  • Computer literacy for ECD practitioners


  • Internet access for web browsing and job seeking
  • Online applications to institutions of higher education
  • Workshops and briefing on career pathing
